The Global Workplace
In cooperation with British NGO War
on Want, the International Centre for Trade Union Rights has produced
a set of worksheets and a detailed reference manual for use by trade union
reps. This comprehensive set of education materials comprises the 'Global
Workplace' project.
The
course, like the ICTUR journal, International Union Rights, approaches
the subject from a trade union rights perspective. By learning about these
rights, and their violations around the world, students understand the
real impacts of globalisation on people around the world, and the role
of trade unions in defending their interests at a local level with a global
perspective, and at a global level with a local perspective. To support
this approach to learning the materials include articles and opinion written
by workers affected by globalisation. Students are encouraged to join
discussions and to add their own experiences while a tutor leads them
through a flexible course structure. All materials are provided and include
worksheets, reference materials, talking points and resources - and a
manual packed with background information on international issues.
The course concludes with a role-play
during which students get an opportunity to draw on the knowledge that
they have acquired and to explore further the motives and forces when
work is 'going global'.
At present the Global Workplace is being
piloted in the UK but discussions are underway with ICTUR's national committees
with a view to producing the course around the world. Trade Unions can
acquire a free sample pack upon request - please contact the ICTUR office.
